Omaha Hi-Low: Basic Outline
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha/8 starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A round of betting follows where players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. One more sequence of betting happens. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of betting follows at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where many entrants get baffled. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use exactly three cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical concept in just about every poker game.
A lower hand is more complex, but really opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the entire pot.
It may seem complex initially, following a few rounds you will be able to get the basic subtleties of play with ease. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an amazing assortment of betting options and seeing that you have many individuals shooting for the high, and many battling for the low hand.
