Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 in which he loved gambling on different card games at a young age. He found himself getting really aggressive in the above-mentioned card games while competing against his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a bit and moved to New York to compete in some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were tough as he would play many hours and do not win a majority of the time. He made some extra money by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he possibly could better his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more rest and focus attention more on poker.

The real advancement in his abilities began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would often compete against each other. He had access into some of the greatest minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard would sharpen his strategic thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.

Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie to head out to Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker world ever. Howard Lederer headed to Sin City in 1993 and competed in cash games for the following 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
