Omaha Hi-Low: Basic Overview
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha/8 begins just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A round of wagering ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of wagering ensues. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of players can get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to use precisely three cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same approach in nearly all poker games.
The lower hand is more complex, but really opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand wins the complete pot.
While it seems difficult at the outset, after a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the base nuances of play easily enough. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha High-Low offers an exciting assortment of betting possibilities and seeing that you have many players trying for the high hand, as well as several battling for the low hand.
