Phil Ivey has been labeled as the number one poker contender on the planet by many of the top-ranked pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to NJ before his first birthday. His grandfather taught Phil one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was addicted to poker and wished to pickup everything he could about poker. He routinely told his parents that he was going to be a professional poker player. He didn’t permit the negative feedback from other people destroy his ambition of being one of the greatest poker competitors in the world.

Phil began playing seriously after acquiring a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He honed his skills at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The initial number of years for him were a learning experience and winning was not a normal outcome at the time. He became known at the 2000 WSOP when he made two final tables and won his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the final table he destroyed many of the better known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

Phil made a decision to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Vegas. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Phil credits his success to dedication and an eternal passion for the game of poker. He says that he is picking up skills every day and is quite humble about his achievements. He knows he makes mistakes every single game of poker and constantly strives to get better.

Even though Ivey has won some large tournaments, he favors destroying cash games on a normal basis.
