Omaha Hi Lo: General Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most difficult but favored poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has increased in popularity so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A round of betting follows where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few entrants get baffled. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must use exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same concept in almost all poker games.
The lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the high hand takes the complete pot.
It may seem complex at first, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to get the fundamental nuances of the game with ease. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting assortment of betting options and seeing that you have many individuals trying for the high, along with several shooting for the low. If you prefer a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
