Omaha Hi-Lo: Fundamental Outline
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha hi/low begins like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. After all the players have either called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of wagering happens and then the river card is flipped. The players must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where some players can get flustered. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use precisely three cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same approach in almost every poker game.
The low hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand wins the entire pot.
While it seems complex at first, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the fundamental subtleties of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing range of betting choices and because you have several individuals shooting for the high hand, as well as several trying for the low hand.
