Poker Face

Do you ever have that itch? The itch to gamble, to head to the nearest casino, to find a high stakes casino game of Hold’em, to sit at a Twenty-one table for hours on end. I really like that itch. And I love to scratch it.

I also like to watch men and women gamble. No 2 poker faces seem equal. When I wager I like to assume I put on a poker face which is impenetrable. Except I know I’ve specific mannerisms. For one, the only time I smoke cigarettes is when I bet on poker or Blackjack. And then I chain smoke. But I smoke no matter if I am succeeding or losing, no matter if I have a great hand or bad.

I once bet in a very weekly poker game. The casino game was always five card draw. There was a gentleman who played with us every week who generally wore a hat. When he was given a very good hand, unconsciously, he would begin touching and wagering with his hat. Needless to say, he by no means won.

The greatest poker player I ever saw was a gentleman who created a lot more movements and signals at a poker table than anybody I had ever seen. He was impeccable in the way he dressed. Always an high-priced suit and tie, shoes shined and nails manicured. He was diligent in this manner. And he was generally brushing his pant leg or rubbings his hands or putting his chips in neat little piles.

I use to study him for long periods of time. I’d attempt to see if I could notice his tell. Picking lint off his jacket- did this imply he was bluffing? Stacking his chips in a short pile – did this imply he had a beneficial hand?

Many years later I ran into him inside a bar in Chicago and we had a drink. I asked him if he were aware of all those movements he produced or if they were unconscious. He informed me that every single single thing he did at a poker table was deliberate. He said that everybody is usually checking out everyone else’s poker face. They are trying to spot the the tell.

So his program was to give them lots to believe about. His thinking was if they were thinking about him selecting a piece of fuzz off his shirt and what it meant they sure were not thinking about their cards.

His system was diversion. And it worked for him. Never give up a system that operates for you.
